I have been browsing boards, to find heavily modified boards. What are some of
the most decked out modded boards around? Are there any that do not even resemble the software they are using? (like major bbs, synchronet, mystic, you
get the ideah lol)

I totally get this. I am currently trying to restart my system, and as
such am trying to bring back and update the modules for my particular
BBS package that I wrote to get them up to date with current release of
the software.

I've tripped across a couple lately that make me amazed with the amount of work put in to them:
Bottomless Abyss: bbs.bottomlessabyss.net The Quantum Wormhole: bbs.erb.pw

I would love to check it out, when it's ready. Let me know when it's done or ifyou need someone to test things out. I'll stop in and give it a go.
Take care!

Tjhanks. Right now, I'm putting my qwk networking mod (started in
2014), which is basically a WINS version of the QWK by FTP script that ships with Synchronet.

Is there by chance a way to disable putting all of your message headers int
Just so you know... I've quoted your entire message above. Every
message you post includes all that "header" garbage in it, at the beginning of each message, which should not be happening.

There is one you can get to from BCR game server but cannot remember
the name of it.
...Take my advice. I don't use it anyway.

yes, if i don't use NNTP to read and post. That's all. I will bring
this idea up with Santronics development.

That's odd. I figured maybe it would be an improper toggle in Thunderbird,o
a lot of those 'modded' boards have the plague of annoying long
ansi screens. i hate it when it takes 3+ mins to just get to the
main menu. it's k-rad lameness.

That's odd. I figured maybe it would be an improper toggle in
Thunderbird, or something. Not sure why Wildcat would use somewhat
normal headers /and/ force them to the message body, too. *shrug*

Not everyone can (or want to) cater to only /your/ needs. But it's
good to know you enjoy finding negativity in everything!

posted by nntp or not. I brought this up in the winserver mailing

manner to me again
Well they're not really _my_ needs and i've heard people complain about
it too. I don't know why a sysop thinks going through 10 scrolling ansis is enjoyable for their users. it becomes a parody after a while.
I think bbs's mean different things to different people.
Some people like them for the games.
Some people like myself like them for message bases.
Others like them because of a small user base.

while i certainly don't have 10 scrollers, i added the flag to your
account on my bbs to skip the stuff that is there. and made your
account permanent. for when you maybe call a couple years from now
again hehe
i wont say what the guys name is. he's a great guy. he's a cool guy. his bbs is great. but god damn it takes forever to just get through all the bullshit.
and then shitty mystic dropped me. and i'm trying to get back on to email the guy and mystic thought i was on the node for 45 freaking minutes!
There are other menu systems available for Synchronet 2.x that'll work with a little bit of tweaking. I took the Renegade-like menus, added some color to them, and added an ansi header. You don't have to go too far down to see stock Synchronet, though.
I see a lot of ANSIs out there, would love to see some menu mods that change how the BBSes function.

Since he seems to be directing some of this towards me: I have 3
total "scrollers", a prelogin before the matrix, a welcome
fast that they have to scroll back to see it, than say anything
negative about it. By all means, don't like it? Don't call. Easy
enough.
I was not even THINKING of your bbs.
certainly a lot of your buddies are guilty of the annoying scrollers
that get old after seeing them 2x.

Good thing nobody is trying to cater to you.

Yeah, and I like them for the tacos. Not sure why you're sayin' that stuff, though, or what you're replying to specifically.
I tried downloading a taco from your BBS, but the download failed repeatedly.
I notice that, too - in all fairness, the stock, single-menu Synchronet layout is
pretty dang handy and a lot simpler to deal with. I liked the older modal menus from my youth, so I went with those. It took a little tweaking to make sure I had all of the menu actions reflected in the menu ansis, seems they were made for version 2 and some commands had been changed/added.

Just spent some time there, and yeah, it's very customized, but not better. I found it rather tedious navigating the screens of "icons", particularly in the Forums and News Reader sections. Not to mention
that the descriptions are heavily abbreviated for lack of space, so
you're not always sure what your going into. a list mode is definitely needed.

Nice job on the BBS customizations. Very easy to use with a mouse and lots to see.

"better" is certainly subjective, but you do hit the nail on the head in some > ways as to some challenges. running an icon driven board where the icons are > 12 x 6 means I have to cut things off at 12 characters, it's not really a
problem when I have time and skill to draw a nice icon or go in there and use > some human judgment on what to label something, but there are times when I
import a lot of stuff, and forums and RSS feeds are good examples of that. I > don't consider myself an ANSI artist, more of a coder so on one hand it's
great when I can add a new network or door game, on the otherhand i've got to > get icons and labels for these things. there are over 5000 RSS feeds being
fed through there - they have semi-dynamic icons, but yeah, easy to get lost in there, at least first time (once you recognize the icons like me, you can be in a stupor and find your way around -> we've tested it)
To me, it's more curation than design, but yeah, I acknowledge the clunkiness there and I'd like to reach more of a "curation" phase than "development" (I gotta stop adding stuff - i wish i had a cosysop - i'll be done soon, i keep telling myself). List mode can be a thing for another rewrite, this things held together with rubber bands and chewing gum lol
i think there's definitely things you probably missed in your session - even when you go idle interesting things happens, but i mean it's fair to come to the conclusion it's not "better" at face value 2 seconds in if traditional BBS's interfaces are your jam - which is probably a lot of people here. me personally, i'm totally happy how it's turned out though myself for whatever reasons.
sometimes i use arrows to get around, sometimes i use typeahead mode, but mostly i just use my mouse and slouch way back. sometimes i just trip out off the screensavers and fall out of my chair. maybe it's just a curiosity for some, but i can loiter here endlessly. it's designed for loitering, really - i guess in my BBS heyday, I'd loiter on multi-line boards for hours - that's the nostalgia goal for me, loitering on the fringes of cyberspace with gifted delinquents, it's more abstract. :)
cheers,
derdok
